You may remember the Saturday Night Live skit from this past weekend in which Melissa McCarthy dressed as white house Press Secretary Sean Spicer and proceeded to give an impressive comedic performance based off the real deal.

SNL is known for pushing the satirical envelope at times, and out of context the vid seemed to fit that bill, but after looking at the actual press conference it can be determined that those live from New York weren’t as inaccurate as one would expect. When political skits can write themselves like that, it doesn’t look so good through the lenses of the white house staff, and in this case, especially Sean Spicer.

Ever since President Trump has taken the oath of office, Sean Spicer’s name has been mentioned all over different news sources due to what has been a rocky start between the new Press Secretary and the media. Whether you like it or not, you’ve most likely overheard something or another about Sean Spicer. From what has been articulated through news sources so far, it seems Mr. Spicer is an unpleasant character.

But how can we know for sure? After all, most don’t know much about the man besides his position, and even then those who do know his position don’t know much about his position, let alone his background in politics in general.

So… who is Sean Spicer? What is his role? Why the media scuffle? Let’s explain starting with the basics:

Sean Spicer is the current White House Press Secretary and Communications Director for President Donald Trump. His communications career began in 2000 taking the role as the communications director for the House Government Reform Committee, and three years later taking the same position for the House Budget Committee. Moreover, he eventually became the communications director for the Republican National Committee in 2011, a position he’d keep until being named White House Press Secretary and Communications Director back in December.

Knowing this, it’s important to learn what exactly a communications director does. According to whitehouse.gov, communications directors generally make sure everything’s in check between their represented firm or organization and the general public. That means Sean Spicer has had the job of representing his respected branches of government to those governed through accessible media for years.

Sean Spicer seems to be a seasoned veteran when it comes to communications. He has over 15 years of experience and has managed to fly under the radar right until recently. The only Sean Spicer-related stories that could be found on trusted sources such as The Washington Times and CNN before the 2016 election got hectic were general GOP updates in which Spicer would have an included quote or two.

With that being said, it seems nonsensical for Mr. Spicer to have acted how he did during that White House press briefing. As a man that’s so accustomed to handling press situations, it seemed out of character for him to say the least. While there’s no straight answer as to why he acted in such a way that day, there are some possibilities to consider.

Firstly, he is new to giving press conferences at such a significant level, so it’s likely he’s been nervous and overcompensating. Secondly, for a long while he did not agree with nor support Trump’s political campaign, especially regarding the immigration stances of the candidate. Perhaps there are disagreements among the two of them that have yet to be resolved and Spicer was simply frustrated. Thirdly, President Trump has been known for his forceful speeches during rallies and debates. It could be that he may have ordered Mr. Spicer to speak with more chutzpa than what he was used to, resulting in an undesirable outcome.

Whatever the case, first impressions are not always how we’d like them to be. With time, Mr. Spicer should adjust to his new role and things will be more smooth sailing. If not, at least SNL will have more skit material.
